Movie Review - To All The Boys I've Loved Before

To All the Boys I've Loved Before is a heart-warming, romantic comedy that is based off the book, written by Jenny Han. It is the first of three, and it shows Lara Jean Covey, a junior in high school, as she finds herself in a bit of a situation.

Warning! Spoilers Ahead. Obviously.

Lara Jean tells us in the beginning that she has five very special, very secret, love letters, written to the five people she's liked in her life. They're only for her, that is until her younger sister, Kitty, sends them out in hopes that Lara Jean will find someone to love her. One of the boys is her older sister's ex-boyfriend, one of them is dating her ex-best friend, and the other one that we meet is gay. Through a mess of events that has me, and probably everyone else watching this movie, feeling some severe second-hand embarrassment, Lara Jean is now fake dating Peter Kavinsky, her ex-best friend's now ex-boyfriend, in order to make her jealous and want to get back with Peter.

This sets forward a wild turn of events, with Peter and Lara Jean falling for each other while being oblivious to the other's feelings. From the point of a viewer, it is insanely frustrating.

This movie was very well made though, but unfortunately I cannot say how the movie differs from the book, as I am a college student and I have no time to read for Fun anymore. Thanks, Fredonia.

There are a few "cinematic shots" and "film things" I want to talk about. There was one shot when Peter and Lara Jean were arguing in the school hallway but they were separated by a post in the hallway. It was very split-screeny, and I am sure that there's an actual word for that shot, but my point is that it was a very good shot and it showed how divided Peter and Lara Jean were in that moment. In addition to that one, the movie started with Lara Jean in a field with who she thought she loved (her sister's ex-boyfriend) and ended with Lara Jean in a different field with the person she actually loves, Peter. The comparison to the two was very nice and it showed how Lara Jean grew throughout the movie.

If you want to watch To All the Boys I've Loved Before, it's on Netflix! And if you want to read it, I hope you have more time than me. The rest of the trilogy is coming to the screen soon, so get on it!

  1. Hey Sophie. Nice observations about the symbolism in the movie. This was also a nice overview of the plot- I haven't seen the movie in a while, so the recap was helpful. Like you, I haven't read the book, but I plan to at some point. I also struggle to find time to read for fun, but I recommend reading before bed, even if it's just for 10 minutes. At that pace, you can fit in over an hour of reading each week.

  2. You sound very smart on the behind the scenes on the editing that goes in. This movie was a big hit and they certainly connected to their target audience. I wasn't part of that target but their well execution cannot be ignored. The plot seems original and sounds like the story might not be over. I saw the trailer on youtube, the cast looked good.. I recognized the one guy from the show the fosters, I saw some of that on a plane. I'm sure the main character (girl) has a lot of confidence even though it might not seem that way because having your personal thoughts leaked like that and facing what comes next takes big mental strength. Nice post. -Connor F.
