Movie Review: The Witch
The Witch is a horror movie- my least favorite genre. I tend to stay away from horror movies, but this one caught my eye. It is about a family living in New England in the 17th century after they've been kicked out of their Puritan plantation. After their newborn, Samuel, disappears while under the watch of the eldest daughter, Thomasin, they begin to suspect that witchcraft is involved.
Warning: Spoilers ahead. Mention of graphic scenes.
We, as viewers, see that Sam was taken by a witch. And (this is graphic) he was basically turned into a mush which the witch then "bathed" in. It was so gross and disturbing to watch, and I debated just not watching it but I stuck it out. Thankfully there were no more scenes like this.
Throughout the movie, bad things keep happening that cause Thomasin's family to believe that she is the witch. Her younger brother, Caleb, also goes missing and gets taken by the actual witch, and because Thomasin was again the only person there, her family thinks she is the witch. When Caleb comes back, naked and feverish in the middle of the night, Thomasin is the one that finds him. Caleb has cuts all over his body, and he is speaking in prayer and in very weird, short sentences. At one point, he pukes up a bitten apple, and this scene is so dramatic and so well done, it seemed almost too real to have been acted out.
At this point, the family is in distress as they have had two children die, and everyone is blaming each other for the witchcraft that is happening. Thomasin is being blamed by her mother and her twin siblings, and Thomasin is accusing her twin siblings of being witches as they have been talking to "Black Philip," a black goat that showed up on their farm. Their father, tired of everything that is happening and angry at everyone involved, locks them up with the goats overnight. Naturally, the witch comes again, kills the goats and takes the twins, but leaves Thomasin, relatively unscathed.
Her parents blame her. Her mother specifically tries to kill her, but Thomasin stabs her multiple times in self defense, crying as she does. The movie ends with Thomasin joining the witches, and signing the Devil's book, selling her soul to him.
Overall, this movie wasn't really scary, just horrifying. It had some graphic scenes and nudity, but it was also well made. The scene where Caleb dies after puking up the apple was so well done, and the scene where Thomasin joined the devil and the witches was a fitting end, as she finally was able to get something for herself rather than basically be a maid at home while getting accused of being a witch.
This movie is available on Netflix to watch, if you can stand the few graphic scenes.
