Movie Review: Frozen II
Frozen II is the sequel to Frozen, which came out 6 years ago. As Frozen II came out just a week ago, I'm going to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. But, just in case I miss something,
Warning! (Mild) Spoilers Ahead!
Frozen II has all of the familiar characters from the original, but this time they're all going through something. Elsa is hearing a voice that is drawing her away from her kingdom of Arendelle, Olaf is growing up, and Kristoff is just trying to propose. Eventually, Elsa decides to leave to go after the voice and find out what it wants, and also because it is apparent that another kingdom may need her help, along with Arendelle needing saving yet again. The whole gang joins her, Anna swearing to help her, Olaf coming along to bring laughs, and Kristoff and Sven providing the transport.
I personally think this movie is better than the original, and that isn't something I usually say. It answers the question of why Elsa was born with magical powers, and it has a lot of important messages within the songs and the overall plot of the movie.
For one, the animation is amazing. During every song led by Elsa, there is some part of the animation that just stands out and makes her the center of focus. The background disappears and her ice magic flows, and it's just beautiful. I cried in the theater because of the animation alone. And also, the song that Kristoff sang? The animation there was priceless, and alluded to many male-fronted bands, specifically Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody music video.
And speaking of songs, the songs in this movie were spectacular. The messages in all of the songs are amazing. The main song, "Into the Unknown," is Elsa's song about not wanting to risk anything that she now has; Anna sings "The Next Right Thing," which is about not knowing what to do next after something really difficult happens; Kristoff is dealing with love, and sings about being "Lost in the Woods," while trying to figure out his feelings (Also, Sven in this song? Beautiful.); and Olaf sings about growing up in his song, "When I Am Older." All of the songs have such beautiful messages and are paired with beautiful animation that makes it so, so good. One song, "All is Found," is a lullaby sang by Elsa and Anna's mother in a flashback scene with the Queen and Princess as children. It foreshadows a huge part of the movie, and it brings the whole story together at the end when during Elsa's "Show Yourself," lyrics from both "All is Found" and "Into the Unknown" are brought together.
Frozen II reinforces all of the messages in the original movie, of sisterhood, true love, and knowing who you are, while adding in new messages of growing up and how to deal with past mistakes. It's beautifully animated and answers some questions that a lot of people had (including me) after the first movie.

I saw this movie opening weekend, and I couldn't stop laughing. Olaf made that movie for me. I also agree that this sequel was better than the original. It did keep to the true meaning of the original about sisterhood. I also loved how they developed each character further. Also loved how they left the opportunity for another installment in the Frozen world.
ReplyDeleteI thought this review was really thorough without spoiling the movie. I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds sweet from the way you described it. You made some interesting observations here, like the allusion to Queen's music video. You made me even more excited to see the film in a couple of weeks! -Abby
