Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean

In honor of Disney+ coming out recently, I watched the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I forgot how much I had enjoyed them. And if you're asking me "Hey, Sophie, why didn't you watch the other two? There are five of them after all!" The answer is: I find that the first three were really good, and the last two seem, to me, as a way to try and drag out the series. This is going to be a three-in-one review, so bear with me.

Warning! Spoilers Ahead!

The first movie, Curse of the Black Pearl, introduces us to Elizabeth Swan, the main character throughout the series, alongside Will Turner and Captain Jack Sparrow. In the movie, we see Elizabeth take the pirate coin from Will, which later in the movie sparks the events that follow. When the coin comes into contact with water again, it sends out a sort of signal to the pirates of the Black Pearl, who are searching for all the coins. Long story short, Elizabeth gets taken by them, Jack and Will embark on a journey to save her, and in the end... Elizabeth and Will are pirates now?

In second movie, Dead Man's Chest, Jack has a blood debt to hand in to Davy Jones, so then another journey begins where they search for the chest that contains Davy Jones's heart and try to retrieve the key. All three of them, Elizabeth, Will, and Jack are on the run from the East India Trading Co., as they're criminals (read: pirates). Another long story short: Jack is almost killed by cannibals, the East India Trading Co. ends up with the heart of Davy Jones, and Jack is eaten by a Kraken.

The third movie, At World's End, brings Jack back to life as he is needed to complete their quest: get Davy Jones out of control of the Flying Dutchman. Because the East India Trading Co. has control of Davy Jones's heart, they control the seas. They are working toward getting rid of pirates altogether, so naturally they release Calypso in order to win the fight against Davy Jones and all of the East India Trading Co. In the end, Davy Jones is killed and Will Turner takes over of the Flying Dutchman. After the credits, there is a small, really cute scene which I didn't know existed until my roommate told me. I'm not going to spoil it, but if you watch the movie, wait until the end credit scene! My heart burst!

These movies all tell a really good story. I never thought it was really predictable, and they brought in new characters every movie which kept it interesting and fun. They were also filmed, I think with my high school knowledge of history, pretty historical for being historical fiction. Fashion, as well as decor or architecture.

I think my favorite part was that characterization that the characters went through. Elizabeth had always been fascinated with pirates, and she became one, but she also became stronger through that. She started as the daughter of the Governor, destined to marry some rich man, and she ended as a one of the Pirate Lords, the Pirate King to be specific, married to an immortal pirate whom she actually loved. That;s so bad ass! Will too- he went from a meek blacksmith who didn't get the credit he deserved to become an immortal pirate who actually did his job (unlike a certain Davy Jones). They all became stronger, which I really loved.

Overall, all three of these movies are beautifully made and together tell a great story. The actors do a great job with their characters, too, and they're believable- they could have been real people at some point (but not really because one of them is a goddess and there are a few immortal pirates).
If you want to watch all the Pirates of the Caribbean, they're on Disney+!! Get your binge on!
