Movie Review: Mulan

With Disney's live action rendition of Mulan  coming early next year, I thought I'd do a review on the original animation. Mulan  is one of my favorite Disney movies, if not my favorite. It has some of my favorite songs and my favorite characters. Warning! Spoilers Ahead.  Mulan  is set in ancient China around the time that the Huns invaded China. Mulan is at the age where she needs to find a husband, but the matchmaker says that she will never bring her family honor because of who she is and an accident that she caused. Later, it is announced that one man from every family must fight for China in the war against the Huns, and her father has to go despite having fought once already and being too old and injured to fight. Mulan makes the decision to go in his place and masquerade as a man to save her father from the war. My favorite thing about Mulan  is the message behind it. A lot of people doubted her and told her that she couldn't bring the family honor...

Movie Review: John Wick

John Wick  was a movie I didn't think I would like. Reading the description provided by Wikipedia, it sounded like a plotless, mindless movie with a lot of killing. And while it does have a lot of death, there is a plot, and a really interesting and intriguing plot. Warning! Spoilers Ahead.  The movie begins with Wick receiving one final gift from his late wife, a puppy, and a note telling him to find peace in her death. Prior to him marrying her, he was an extremely skilled assassin, and only left that way of life when he found her. While going about his day, some Russian thugs try to buy Wick's car off of him and when he says no, they insult him in Russian, thinking he wouldn't understand. When he does and shoots back at them, they leave. That night though, they break into his house, beat him up, kill his dog, and steal his car. And thus ensues Wick becoming an assassin once again. What drew me into this movie was that the entire reason Wick went back into his line ...

Movie Review: Santa Claus is Coming to Town

It's almost Christmas (and almost break!!) so I've reviewed today Santa Claus is Coming to Town . This is my favorite Christmas movie and it always gets me in the spirit of Christmas. I think it's because it is one of the only movies that tells a cute origin story of ol' Kris Kringle in a fun, unique, and magical way. Warning! Spoilers Ahead.  Santa Claus is Coming to Town   begins with a mailman in the North Pole reading letters to Santa - and most of them are questions. The rest of the movie is answering those questions, like where he got his name, why he wears a red coat, why he comes at Christmas. In the end, all of the questions are answered and the mailman goes on to drive around with the characters we met throughout the movie. My favorite part of this movie are the characters- from the Winter Warlock, Burgermeister Meisterbuger, Miss Jessica, all of the Kringle's, and Santa himself. The Winter Warlock as a character teaches the importance of gift givin...

Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean

In honor of Disney+ coming out recently, I watched the first three Pirates of the Caribbean  movies and I forgot how much I had enjoyed them. And if you're asking me "Hey, Sophie, why didn't you watch the other two? There are five of them after all!" The answer is: I find that the first three were really good, and the last two seem, to me, as a way to try and drag out the series. This is going to be a three-in-one review, so bear with me. Warning! Spoilers Ahead! The first movie, Curse of the Black Pearl , introduces us to Elizabeth Swan, the main character throughout the series, alongside Will Turner and Captain Jack Sparrow. In the movie, we see Elizabeth take the pirate coin from Will, which later in the movie sparks the events that follow. When the coin comes into contact with water again, it sends out a sort of signal to the pirates of the Black Pearl, who are searching for all the coins. Long story short, Elizabeth gets taken by them, Jack and Will embark on...

Movie Review: Frozen II

Frozen II is the sequel to Frozen , which came out 6 years ago. As Frozen II came out just a week ago, I'm going to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. But, just in case I miss something, Warning! (Mild) Spoilers Ahead! Frozen II has all of the familiar characters from the original, but this time they're all going through something. Elsa is hearing a voice that is drawing her away from her kingdom of Arendelle, Olaf is growing up, and Kristoff is just trying to propose. Eventually, Elsa decides to leave to go after the voice and find out what it wants, and also because it is apparent that another kingdom may need her help, along with Arendelle needing saving yet again. The whole gang joins her, Anna swearing to help her, Olaf coming along to bring laughs, and Kristoff and Sven providing the transport. I personally think this movie is better than the original, and that isn't something I usually say. It answers the question of why Elsa was born with magic...

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter  by itself is an iconic book movie series, but today I will be talking about the first movie in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone . Different from my other movie reviews, I will be talking more about how this movie compares to the book. Warning: Spoilers Ahead! The Philosopher's Stone  starts off with Harry living in his abusive household and learning about him being a wizard. He and the Hogwarts Groundskeeper, Hagrid, go to Diagon Alley, the wizarding shopping street, to buy his supplies for school and anything else he might need to be a wizard. When he gets to Hogwarts, he gets sorted into Gryffindor, one of the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Throughout the rest of the movie, he and his two best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, notice some strange things and eventually find out about the Philosopher's Stone, which they believe one of the professors is trying to steal. In the end, it is Voldemort who...

Movie Review: Spirited Away

Spirited Away  is a Studio Ghibli film made by Hayao Miyazaki. It is about a girl named Chihiro and her family when they move to a new town and stumble upon a Bath House for spirits. It is more of a coming-of-age movie, with Chihiro working to free both herself and her parents from the clutches of the leader of the Bath House, Yubaba. Warning! Spoilers Ahead.  Spirited Away  is one of my favorite childhood movies. It begins with Chihiro and her parents driving to their new town, with Chihiro complaining about moving away from her friends. Her father takes a wrong turn along the way and seem to come across an abandoned amusement park and they wander onto it. Chihiro finds it incredibly creepy and sketchy and doesn't want to go look at it, but her parents leave her behind so she, not wanting to be alone, follows. The "amusement park" has food being made, but there is no one around. Her parents decide to eat the food and leave money if no one shows up. Chihiro doesn'...
